Definitely an impact player in the HL. Big-10 All-freshman team. From the little I've read, he's an athlete, a very good, versatile defender, and someone who can score but is not really a shooter. I'm more concerned with character here. Suspended as a sophomore for undisclosed reasons. Suspended and thrown off the team for being somewhere he shouldn't have last year. As a freshman, gave the infamous choke gesture. bleacherreport.com/articles/1051551-purdue-vs-indiana-basketball-kelsey-barlow-how-he-can-agitate-the-hoosiersI assume he only plays only 1 year with us. And, the question is, is he available immediately because he was dismissed from Purdue (didn't transfer by choice)? Or, does he have to sit a year? I guess at some point you have to ask if it's worth it to bring in a solid player with a history of questionable decisions for just 1 year of play. Howard Moore apparenly believes it's worth it. If he has to sit, let's hope he can stay out of trouble for 2 years and integrate well with the team for the 1 year he plays.

Where's Mr. Guest? I was hoping to find a pointless and idiotic remark with a joke that only he gets.

I guess Barlow presents the classic "talent vs character" question/concern. Basketball-wise he sounds like a great "get" but what's the baggage? I'm all for second chances but I hope coach Moore and the staff have looked deeper than the stats to get this guy.

I was talking to some west lafayette people yesterday about this. They asked me if there were any bars near uic. I responded yes, everywhere. Their response to that was good luck with him staying out of trouble. Being on a campus like perdue is way different than being in a city like chicago. This young man has had many behavior issues and others related to alcohol. Since he is of legal drinking age and has to sit out a year, I hope he has learned his lesson. Because his past issues plus the chicago bar scene could be a lot of trouble.
This is a risk Moore has to take. Barlow will be eligible in Moore's last year on contract. moore might need a hail mary pass to get an extension at UIC . Barlow might help complete that pass.

gunnar, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Moore get a 5-year contract? So, this will be his 3rd year, and Barlow will be available during his 4th year. Still, he'll have to get an extension some time during that 4th year, or it will be harder for him to recruit.

I'm not liking this at all. It looks like a move that Dildy would have made. Is Moore that desperate and/or unsure of the 2012-13 team that he is willing to take what appears to be a huge gamble with this kid? Scary stuff if you ask me.

Big D, you are correct. It is a 5 year deal. Your point is right on about the extension being needed during the 4th year. It's tough enough to recruit without that over the coaches head. But I wouldn't be surprised if they left the coach out on an island by himself in the last year with no extension.
It's obvious the one year Barlow is eligible will be pivotal for the Moore regime. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I hope the young man matures and has a 1st team all horizon season when he hits the floor, and helps this team get better during his year out in practice.

We'll learn a lot about this young man the year he has to sit out. This year, correct? If he has a love of the night life and bar scene we will find out quite early BEFORE any playing time is involved, I'm sure.
Again, I'm not against second chances but let's be very careful going forward. We have enough problems just getting stability established and a winning attitude developed without taking on guys with "baggage" that could undermine any small gains we make in other areas.
I would think character and maturity would be examined very carefully on any incoming player and I would, personally, pass on any questionable people at this time.......
Just my personal thoughts and feelings for what they are worth.......

I was looking at the worse case scenario: the kid continues doing what he did at Purdue, is a bad influence on the rest of the team, gets thrown off the team, and is not in good academic standing when he leaves. Another hit to the APR score, which we don't need.

yeah, worst case is that he is a cancer to the locker room and doesn't take care of his grades and hurts APR. So things can be a lot worse than just 1/13 of the roster working out. But where this program is, i don't know. we need to just hope for the best, and be prepared for the worst.
you know what they say. everyone deserves a 4th chance.

Transfers don't count in the APR equation. Curious...do you have a source for that? The description of APR that I saw seemed to take into account any scholarship player. So if Barlow is getting a scholarship in 13-14, then he would be counted. He probably wouldn't count the year he sits out, but next year he would, right? I did see where incoming transfers don't count towards the graduation success rate (GSR) of a university, if they earn a degree. But I couldn't find the incoming transfer rules for APR.
