At least JC will be the only coach in UIC history (at least for this program) to have two 20-loss seasons. I wish someone could confirm this. According to the 2009-10 Media Guide (p.69): Since the inception of the Men's Basketball program in 1947-48, UIC teams have lost 20 or more games in a season on 5 occassions. 1970-71 under Tom Russo 1987-88 under Bob Hallberg 1998-99, 1999-00, and 2009-10 under Jimmy Collins. Just another record for UIC's all-time winningest coach.

Nothing new on the link- just some rehash from Chicago College Basketball site regarding Tracy Webster and the following list of candidates:
*Ernie Kent - Former Oregon coach would bring a high profile and national recruiting reach *Jerrance Howard or Jay Price - Illinois assistants already know the local recruiting waters. *Vince Taylor - Minnesota assistant was widely mentioned for other job openings this spring. *Howard Moore - Wisconsin assistant could thrive in the Horizon League. *Tracy Webster - Local HS coaches wanted interim Webster at DePaul. Perhaps they'll get him at UIC instead. *Tavaras Hardy - Northwestern asst. is a Chicago guy through-and-through. *Matthew Graves - Butler assistant could spread the mojo to Horizon rival

The timing of the resignation would have had a negative impact on Collins pension if he had left sooner. And while Jimmy is a team player, his first obligation is to see that his family is taken care of and part of that is financially. Since you appear to be well-versed in the area of State of Illinois Employee Pension Rules and Regulations I have a question. The effective date of the Collins resignation is 8/31/2010, more than a month hence. Could he have made his announcement much earlier, keeping the same effective date? Unless there is some rule that these announcements cannot me made more than 6 weeks prior to the effective date, then it appears that Jimmy did screw us with the late announcement. The only way that I would give Collins a pass on this is that he delayed his decision until the Dildy thing played itself out--the way it ended saved plenty of embarrassment for both Dildy and Schmidt. There is no rule that you cannot make an announcement at any time prior to your actual retirement. At this point, I'm more inclined to believe that Collins may have done it until the Dildy thing played itself out. With the retirement system Collins could have indeed made a public announcement months ago of his impending retirement to give the University time enough to get a new coach in place. There is a process that one must go through before actual retirement anyway. You let SURS (State University Retirement System) know of your wish to retire and a date for counseling/details/benefits, et al is set. That could be down the road. Once that's done and you're satisfied with the outcome. Forms are to be filled out. Nothing, of course is set, until you sign. So Jimmy could have indeed made a public announcement of his retirement after the season and not actually left the University until August 31 and his pension/benefits would not have been affected. As far as Jimmy announcing earlier and the University hires a new coach and then are liable for paying "two coaches"- they could make the new hire effective Sept 1.

Thanks Chuck A, it took awhile but the points you've made are pretty standard university system fare regarding retirement...especially a D1 coach who knows better than anyone the value of getting a replacement ASAP. I understand the Dildy factor but still believe the that could have been solved 5 other ways.
The 120 wasted days will linger in all the wrong places I fear!
