Lipitz should have never extended Yak by a year. Big mistake and not really deserved. Could’ve given him a slight raise for moving to the Valley but extension for what? Had he shown improvement in year 2 (this year) in the Valley, go ahead and extend him a year. But he jumped the gun and now we’re stuck at least one more year. We can’t finish this contract or we’ll be starting over in year 5 in the Valley. What was Loyola doing in year 5?
The only type of coach I want is one with head coaching experience that won as a head coach. Lower D1, D2, D3…I don’t care. Get someone that won games based on coaching, and I’m talking organized, patient, clean offense. Enough of this high-tempo, win-or-die by the three chaos. Didn’t work with McClain…hasn’t worked with Yak. That’s a system for high majors getting 5* athletes…not mid majors where kids can barely dribble and make layups. I can’t believe coach actually said (to JHood) that his offensive philosophy is to get as many paint touches as possible. If that is the case, his players are ignoring him.
I don’t care about recruiting (recruits come when you win). I don’t care about ties to Chicago…though both would be bonuses if the guy can coach. It begins and ends with coaching.
I’ve really had enough of this program’s inability to do anything right. We look like the Bears. Just repeat incompetence from the top down. Hoping Bears clean house this week, and wish UIC would do the same.

Wait what? There is another UIC messsge board? As many paint touches as possible that has to be a joke. I love this. Is this really from an ex Uic assistant?

Erickson was with the Flames for one year. That in itself says a bit about Yaklich and his ability or lack thereof to coach. If a D1 assistant foregoes a D1 program that would give him better exposure, to drop two divisions down says, to me, “This head coach doesn’t have what it takes to put together a winning program.” In my opinion, and I’ve mentioned this on many occasions: it doesn’t take 3-4 years to determine if a guy can coach. That can be determined in year one. Look what happened with John Brannen when he took over NKU. Josh Scherz is going a great job at Indiana State. This is year four for Yak and he hasn’t grown or improved yet…and we’ve got two more years of him after this one!

I dont like it but I think that Matt Eberflus will stay hc for next year.

If Eberflus is back, then the expectation is for us to be a Playoff team, not a Super Bowl Champion. He is a bad Head Coach.

Speaking of former UIC assistants, Dee Brown is killing at Roosevelt just down the road. They’re 12-2 and ranked in the top 25 in NAIA. I feel like he would be a perfect candidate especially since he’s from Chicago.

Roosevelt University is 13-2 and are ranked #20 in the NAIA rankings. It is their first time in 5 years being ranked.
Coach Dee is also very well connected and respected in the Chicagoland area. He also just started a podcast with other basketball personalties. Point being, he is someone that would have brought excitement to a program.
We are struggling - again - and the excitement around the program is non-existent.

Well, at least we now have 2 possible candidates. Hopefully AD Lipitz is actively looking for a replacement for Yaklich.

Probably impossible, but if we’re not going to open the wallet for a bigger name/proven winner, we really need someone with energy…that can inspire the fanbase. Remember our old friend Bruce Pearl?…didn’t he used to go into the dorms at Milwaukee and convince the students to come out? More than anything, I’m bothered by the fan support this year. I mean I think this is the worst I’ve ever seen it. It is bad. Part of it is the crap team…again. But a huge part is that it’s just too damn expensive, especially to see a crap team. Why in the hell are tickets still $20? All tix for the rest of the season should be $5…get people inside. People have spoken…they’re not coming for $20…so do something about it. UIC is not helping to put Yak in the best position to succeed.
I’m worried that this job is going to be seen as hopeless…with three straight losing coaches and no fan support, you play 75% road games and will never be able to compete. You take this job to make a couple million and get fired. We’re never going to attract the best that way.
Also, I will never fully be comfortable hiring Illini. Has Dee Brown really done enough for us to take a chance? He’s from the McClain/Yak coaching tree…lol. Plus, all headlines would be “Illini star leads Flames to another win”…it’s always pub for UIUC and less so for UIC.

Big D Yak needs more than a crowd to succeed sorry. How about some good local recruits with fundamentals and play the right kids and run a offense that makes sense? I've seen better grade school offense.

I've seen better grade school offense. Yeah, I agree. He’s proven his scheme is not going to work. one benefit of local recruits is that their families/friends come to games. We need as many in the seats as we can get.

Big D -
Exactly my worries. What is the draw right now to this job? What can someone bring that hasn’t before?
Yak was interviewed for the Michigan Head Coaching job the year before! I mean, come on here.
This job, to me as a UIC fan, looks like a dead end job. Yak will be fired eventually and end up as an Asst Coach and do well. But guys want to get midmajor Head Coaching jobs and move up, not back down. We have never produced that. Ever!
