I think we can surprise people but that preseason ranking is pretty fair. The one thing that the article was off on is that it seemed they didn’t realize or perhaps acknowledge the return of Damaria Franklin.

Having not even played a game in The Valley, the Flames are already better than Valpo, Evansville, Illinois State and Indiana State. That puts us at least polling in 8th place. Belmont has lost a ton to graduation and their adjustment to the MVC will be a bit tougher than Murray State's, in my opinion. Coach Yaklich has done the best job yet of putting together a group of players with above average talent that can compete from November 7 on. Coach has also shown improvement, finishing 4 games under .500 his first season to 2 games under .500 this past campaign. My feeling is that UIC will make a surprising impression in its first season in the conference. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the team finishes top 6!

Coach Yak and his staff have done a pretty good job clearing the dead weight from this roster and completely rebuilding it for year 1 in the Valley. On paper, we’ve had a pretty good recruiting class. I hope we can still nab another productive big somehow…but it’s getting late with players due on campus soon. If we can get another solid big, this will have been about as good an off-season as I could realistically imagine.
With that said, we’ve been a crummy horizon team for 20 years. We have proven nothing and, until we do, I’m fine with us being predicted in the bottom quarter. We need to start stepping up our game.

This article is underselling INSU. They return 75% of their scoring from last season and got rid of all the duds. What they brought in will move them up. In my Opinion UIC will not be better than INSU but the others definitely because I think UIC is trending in the right direction.
