So, the other day I sent an email to someone on the alumni board about ways to promote the new messageboard....here's the relevant portions of the email....
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"I'm wondering if you can help me, either directly, or by referring me to someone that can help me. Basically, I am a UIC grad (class of 2001) who is very much into UIC basketball. I'd call it a near obsession
Anyway, for the past few years, a small group of very big UIC fans have talked via message board on the internet. Recently, I, along with a few other people, started up a new UIC Flames Basketball Message Board through a free online service. The address is:
uicflames.proboards28.com
Another site (uichoops.com) was also recently started. I guess what I'm asking is if you know of an effective way to spread the word about this new messageboard. A lot of us see a real great thing in UIC basketball. It's a way to fill students with pride and also a way to connect them more to the school that they attend. When I see schools like Duke, Kentucky, UIUC, and even smaller schools like SIU with their big fan crowds, it just bothers me that UIC can't fill a student section at the Pavilion. So, the UIC online presence is now trying to really push student involvement, at least on the internet at first, with the hope that online interest evolves into offline interest. Plus, the UIC messageboard is a great way of promoting alumni involvement. We talk year-round about the latest UIC basketball news, but we also have an off-topic section where alumni can talk about whatever they wish, including the increased academic reputation of UIC.
So, again, if there's anything you can think of which would bring this website to the attention of more UIC alumni, it would be greatly appreciated. We've tried contacting UICNews and Chicago Flame writers, but have not had much response. We also tried contacting the athletic department and UIC radio, and again not much response. We only have about 80 online fans that are aware of the site but the messageboard is usually pretty active, and it will be undergoing an upgrade in the next week or two.
In any case, I'd like to thank you for taking your time to read this. I just want to get more people involved with UIC sports because we've been fielding a pretty good team as of late."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So, this email was sent to the alumni office in Champaign nearly a week ago....a person responded and said this message was forwarded to Chicago staff. And, as you all may have guessed, did the Chicago staff get back to me? Nope, not yet....my guess is that they will not. Sometimes I question the dedication of UIC and other associated organizations to promoting student/alumni involvement....wouldn't they jump all over this and promote it? Why has every outlet we've contacted basically ignored us?
