With the departure of the Swingin'(and missin') Sammy, which Cub is most likely to become captain?

My vote's for Maddux....he did a great job for us last year. He's got experience and based on what he's done in the past, it has to go to him....

My vote is for no one. I don't think baseball teams need captains. Let clubhouse leaders develop.

Yea, I was considering maddux as well, but I go with him up because he may not be here for much longer (1 year left on contract) and he's not really outspoken. He's a great clubhouse guy, but doesn't strike me as a leader on the team.

I question whether or not Sammy was made captain because he really has captain quality or because Dusty just wanted to make him happy. Granted, he's more outspoken, but it's well known that he's not very well liked in the clubhouse. A clubhouse guy is usually a guy who is well liked, who people would follow. Sammy just seemed to be the most well known player. Look at the Bulls for example. Looking at it, I am not too sure who I'd make captain, seeing as I don't know how they all interact. It's probably harder to make a single captain too seeing as there is 25 men on one team. Glendon Rusch or Maddux seem like a guy who coud probably fit that mold, at lesat for the starting pitchers. Todd Hollandsworth the same for the fielders.

I'm pretty sure Don Baylor was the manager who gave him the C. When looking for a captain, I'd be looking for a guy who's liked by his teammates, but more importantly, a guy who is well respected by the team. I also like to see someone who's willing to get into another guy's face if the situation calls for it. (God know's Dusty's not going to do it) The team is in DESPERATE need of leadership. The team has no focus. Can you imagine how many less headaches there would've been last year if someone would have pulled Kent Merker aside and said "The commentators don't affect your pitching. You want to shut them up, do it on the field". All the players love playing for Dusty because he doesn't hold them accountable for anything, but when the proverbial s@#! starts to hit the fan, someone needs to get these guys in line, focused and motivated. To me, that's where a good captain comes in.

I was wrong on that Sammy thing. But at the same time, I know what you're saying about a captain and his responsibilities. I just think that too often it's assumed that the best player should automatically be made captain. Look at the Bulls, for example. Antonio Davis and Kirk Hinrich are captains, I believe. I could be wrong, because for some reason I thought they had three, but I don't know why that would be. Anyways, Antonio Davis is the veteran and you can just tell that the players look up to him. Hinrich is young, but you can see that when he's on the floor, he is a leader. The Bulls may not be the best example because they're so young. While the Cubs are young, they do have alot more veterans as well as double the size of players. With that being said, I just don't see how Sammy could have ever been a good Captain. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy that could ever pull someone aside and talk to them about anything. And while Dusty didn't make him captain, part of me thinks that he just wanted to keep him happy.
