Sorry to those who dislike the UIC academic talk, but I for one happen to enjoy it. We all know that UIC research has jumped dramatically in the past 10 years. However, there was a short article in UICnews today saying that UIC is now the 4th fastest growing research school.....and 1st for comprehensive research. Granted, it was only compared to 60 schools, but still....very good news....

No matter how it’s measured, the amount of research funding UIC receives continues to increase.
According to the latest figures from the National Science Foundation, UIC ranks fourth in the nation in percentage increase for federally financed research and development expenditures when compared with 60 other universities and medical centers.
The top three spots are held by medical centers – Baylor College of Medicine, University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Oregon Health Sciences — putting UIC at the top for comprehensive federally funded research.
Between 1996 and 2002, UIC’s research funding went up 16 percent and the trend continued since then, according to preliminary NSF figures.
UIC received about $59 million in federal funding in 1996. In 2002, that figure jumped to $143 million.
Between fiscal year 2002 and 2003, the campus reported $168 million in expenditures, a 17.4 percent increase over the previous year.
The amount of research funding a university brings in is one measure of how it performs compared to similar institutions.
