Man, did you see the jump Washington and Wake Forest made? If we can win against UC Santa Barbara we should make a similar jump- at least into the top ten.

UIC Flames men's soccer rankings:
Soccer America #18 College Soccer News #24 NSCAA/Adidas #22 NSCAA #3 in Great Lakes (behind Notre Dame and Indiana)
Very impressive! But the article on UICFlames.com, Coach Trask put it best when he said that this team has loftier goals than early season rankings. Great to hear!

The Gauchos are also underrated in that poll at #19. You guys are gonna have some issues matching up against some of our players, but I'm sure you have your own playmakers we'll have to account for. Should be a competitive match and good for the ole SoS for both teams. Go Gauchos!!!

It'll be a great game. Hey Gaucho Fan, I know you've heard it before, but what's a Gaucho?

Wasn't Gaucho one of the Marx Brothers?

In short, a Gaucho is a South American cowboy, usually from Brazil or Argentina from the high grassland areas (the pampas). A more delatiled def: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GauchoIt is also the last name of Ronaldinho. Go Gauchos!!! Btw, I'm the guy who predicted a 2-0 result

Yeah, Gauchos wear leather chaps and ride wild stallions. Kinky, babe.
Anyway, that name had to have come from the same people who came up with the "Skyscrapers" for UIC.

Skyscrapers? Oh man, I've heard that before but never thought it was really true! I like Flames; it's meaningful, flows pretty well, isn't common, however, it can be made fun of easily, but eh.
Gaucho Fan, what's it like at UCSB in term of attention soccer is getting? Obviously, you guys have a pretty good team (and are Top 10 in a poll). What's the support like? I saw that you predicted about 950 for the game. Is that what it's usually like for games?
And also, if you're going to the game, don't look past #6 Pavle Dundjer. He's arguably our best player.
Here's to a good game.

So far this year, we have attendances in the 900's for home games. UCSB is on a quarter system with classes not starting until the end of September, so the attendances should rise in October (1,500-ish). Much of the current support comes from the community and students that stick around during the summer. The popularity of the program has risen dramatically over the past 3-4 years with the success the team has had. It is about as popular as the men's b-ball team which has produced mediocre results on the court. In fact, there is a current poll on our message board asking which is the most popular sport, and men's soccer was voted as #1 (very unofficial). Postseason matches in the past years have been lively, sometimes crazy events. The student community next to the unversity (Isla Vista) is very densely populated with students and they like to enjoy adult beverages. We had a match in 2004 (Elite 8 match) that saw over 11,000 in attendance which included a streaker and a goal being carried away by celebrating students. Last year when SDSU came for a playoff game, the SDSU players had trouble dealing with over 3,000 pretty crazy and creative fans. Great photo gallery of our Elite 8 match: fascha.smugmug.com/gallery/308772/5Gallery of our conference match from this week versus Cal Poly, a team you will play after us: fascha.smugmug.com/gallery/1859039/1

I forgot to mention that we dropped football in the early 90's, so the only sport that can rival men's soccer this time of year is women's v-ball which is also quite popular. Our current coach (Tim Vom Steeg) is an alum who took over a team that was something like 2-17-1 the year before he took over. That was about 7 years ago. We play almost all our home games at night and on a very large pitch that is of high quality. We have hosted professional teams (MSL and Mexican) for exhibitions. If you can escape SB with a win or even a tie, your team has done very well. Personally, I hope ya guys stumble a bit against us and Cal Poly and kick some booty the rest of the year. The campus sits right on the Pacific with mountains behind it: www.crseo.ucsb.edu/asr/_borders/ucsb_campus.jpgGo Gauchos!!! Go Flames (after this week)!!!

Congrats on your 2-1 victory. It seems our goalie likes to play out of position in the final minute of a game and concede a goal off a shot from midfield.
Good luck the rest of the season.

Yeah, I was reading a little bit about UCSB soccer on your website. Just thinking about 11000 fans and carrying the goal off of the field is exciting! We're trying to get the support you guys have, but have to admit, it's hard. Unfortunately, fan support lacks for most of our teams (whether they're doing good or bad).
