I am revising my expectations downward for this team. I think our chances of winning the Horizon League are 50-50 at best. This team is one of those that seems unable to win the big game. They haven't done all that badly when you consider everything, but they also haven't done anything to distinguish themselves, either. The biggest win of the year was against Bradley.
Can I b!tch about the schedule one more time? IT SUCKS, FRONT LOADING THE SCHEDULE WITH AWAY GAMES WAS A BAD IDEA, AND THE FLAMES NOW HAVE THE RECORD TO PROVE IT WAS A BAD IDEA.
Winning the regular season title is now absolutely essential, because an at-large bid to the NCAA is out of the question. Furthermore, since these Flames are only so-so on the road, they will likely need the home field to win the Horizon tournament. If they can somehow pull it off and win the Horizon tourney, they'll come into the NCAA unseeded, which means they'll be up against one of the powerhouses early on.
I still think this is a far better team than their record has indicated up to this point, but it is apparent that they are a project and time is starting to work against them. The good news is that the Horizon League is weaker than it has been in recent years, so that works for them.
Time will tell.
