Hello UIC Students and Alumni,
I have recently discovered this site and may I say it's been a pleasure reading the various comments about what's happening on the campus of what truly is one of the great universities in the nation.
Hard to believe it will be 40 years ago next month when I was awarded my degree at the old Chicago Stadium. The UIC Pavilion was of course only a dream. Recently I was on campus and wow what a difference 40 years make. It's so much more inviting and pleasant then it was when I was there. A lot more green and thank goodness a lot less concrete. You'll never know the joy of walking to class or a finial and having rain or melting snow landing on your head from the concrete overhead walkways!! Of course the BSB is still a rat maze, always thought one should get extra credit for just finding your class room in that place. They've done a nice job on the library and athletic facilities also. Tell me, does the Pier Room still exist? Food still awful!
The best part though is the school spirit, very nice to see. For those who think it's not great currently, you should have been there 40 years ago. Only thing I kind of miss is UIC Hockey. Now that was a fun time!! Any talk on campus of someday reviving that sport? In my day it was just a club sport, should would like to see us back in the CCHA and getting some of that TV exposure. I cringe when surfing the dial and see North Dakota St vs. Denver broadcasted as a college hockey game here in Chicago. That should be us!!
Well I'll keep reading the various comments on the board, enjoy them all. Best of luck to you and especially the new UIC grads. Hope you'll be as proud to be a UIC Alum as I am.
Oh, just one other note, occasionally I still see references made to UIC as a "second tier school" let me set the record straight. I've had a wonderful 40 year career in the communications field and had the pleasure of working with people from various universities from all over the world. UIC and UIC graduates don't have to feel inferior at all. You can and will compete with any of them, in any field, at any time. I did, and so will you!
Go Flames!

uic73, just saw your post; I too just recently found this site and started posting to it. I enjoyed, and related to, your memories of UICC. That one about the joy of having dripping water falling on you from the overhead walkways was especially spot on. However, I have to say sitting in the upper portion of the old Circle Forum on a warm spring or fall afternoon was always pleasant. Anytime I come back to Chicago, I always make it a point to drive through or walk around campus. I also try and catch a couple of basketball games. I'm always amazed how much the campus has changed. The more recent graduates that post here have no idea how much different the campus looks and feels. A lot less stark concrete. All of the changes are for the good!!

Welcome uic73! First off, I've graduated from and been employed here for over 30+ years, so I've seen the changes first hand!
The food is better. They have outsourced the food service to a company that provides meals for the students. The Inner Circle also has vendors, such as Wendy's Sbarro's, Subway and a vendor that sells Mexican food and hotdogs.
Not only do we have the Pavilion, but we also have the UIC Forum. It's another place the University can rent out for events graduations and the like.
There is no talk of bringing back hockey. At this point Title IX won't allow it.
The Pier room is still there but it is more open and much like a gathering place. Fraternities still gather there, but it's more a social gathering place. By the way, right next to it is a Dunkin' Donuts!
Again, welcome and enjoy.

Been in the process of moving so haven't really had the internet in a while so been away from the board a little. Always good to welcome another poster!
I am a more recent graduate (Class of 2005) so I don't remember it as UICC and I was also too late for the overhead walkways.
However, it definitely has changed since my time there. I haven't been "on campus" in years except for some basketball games. I have seen the UIC Forum driving by as well as in the news. I think they just recently had a "Make a Wish Foundation" event there. The South part of the campus is nothing like it used to be. I was there during the process of them turning it into what it is now and it is still changing every time I drive around there.
I'm thinking I will have to take the bike and ride down there soon.

Hello UiCJohn,ChuckA,and UIC79;
My most sincere apologies for not getting back to you for your most gracious welcome and kind remarks on my posting to this site. I truly hope I did not bore to many who read my remarks about how our beloved campus once was. It really has become a world class university. When I was there we all felt that this place was going to evolve into a world class academic institution. Now it has! I am so incredibly proud to be a UIC alum. I am also so proud for our future. Someday all will see the letters UIC and rank it with the top universities in the word. That day is not far away!.
However, may I ask a few questions;
Why is UIC merchandise so limited for purchase on line? Why is UIC alum merchandise even more limited? Can some student organization look into this? So tired of UIUC stuff all over the web.
Interesting to see the various colleges receive their diplomas at different times and locations. Is this now the norm? It really was quite a site at the old Chicago Stadium, when all the colleges came together.
My personnel opinion of our current chancellor isn't very high. What's the talk on campus on a replacement? And please, no more UIUC influence. Or am I out of touch on that thinking?
Is there any movement on campus to some day break off from UIUC? I personally think that's UIC's biggest obstacle to future growth. What is the mood on campus if any to break away?
What do those who follow UIC Basketball think the win - lose record should be for Howard Moore to keep his job this year?
Saw the new baseball facility. Outstanding!! However, can someone talk to the athletic department to do a much better job of marketing these games. Look I am retired, the burbs have trips to the Boomers and Cougars games. Us "old" people would love to take a bus trip down to see the Flames. Market this to the burbs and youth groups and schedule the games if possible accordingly. With such a great facility we really should try to get more exposure for this program. A few games on TV? What a great site it would be with the back round of the city.
Well once again thanks for reading my post.
I'll try to post more often but now that I am retired I do travel a lot. However I do remain as always.
Yours for UIC,
UIC73

When I was at Circle, we fought loud and hard to keep racists jerks like Paula Meares out of what should be non-political things such as tutoring Calculus. It was difficult. Believe it or not, there were people who thought we were "diluting" the potential of the lumpen proletariat for revolution by helping them learn Calculus, and fought us tooth and nail to include "Social Justice" (rather than physics and chemistry) as part of our core tutoring.
Unfortunately, the University handed the Presidency over to a corrupt political-wannabee crap named Joseph White, who appointed one of those sick individuals as chancellor of UIC. She then took it on as her personal mission to do anything she could to make the campus - which hasn't been majority white for many years - even less so.
I have personally quit donating to the school, nor will I donate one dime as long as the racist Pig Lady is running the show.
They keep sending me solicitations for donations....They keep inviting me to events....but they don't seem to understand that I am not going to donate a dime to a racist institution, period. Even if I went to school there.
As long a white people - or ANY group of people - are systematically discriminated against and considered second-hand citizens - which IS official policy at UIC under Paula Meares - I will not be supporting or donating ONE DIME to that institution.
Furthermore, I hope UIC's adoption of apartheid policies drives them to financial ruin, because public institutions that adopt institutional racism as official policy (like UIC) NEED TO FAIL. MISERABLY. If nothing more, than to set an example.

They will be looking for a new Chancellor soon.

Have not been on campus for some time. Can someone tell me if the parking next to the "PAV" is still available to public? If not is there parking somewhere for alumni? Would like to attend some baseball games. Now retired and would love to park somewhere, to just walk the campus.
As always,
Yours for UIC,
UIC73

Not sure how much it costs---last time I was there it was $5. Not sure, however, if it's open on non-game days.
There are other pay lots around campus. You might want to choose one that is more centrally located if you're going to tour the school facilities.
If you're going just for baseball, there's a covered parking garage about a block east of the field on the other side of Halsted St. and also across the street from the Physical Education Building.
