Maybe I missed it, but where did it say UIC was even a part of this?
As usual, anything goes for UIUC. We're just a puppet and they're pulling the strings. Maybe when UIC calls me literally every other day asking for money, they should just be up front and say they're collecting for UIUC. At least I wouldn't feel as bad about saying no.
In the end, we're not establishing our own identity; we're just being absorbed by University of Illinois...anything we do will be "University of Illinois did this/that". UIC's leadership has been horrible. I get more and more disgusted every time I see something like this, or about UIUC afraid of being diluted, or UIUC not wanting us to have a law school...you name it.

To be fair, the project and UILabs is headed by University of Illinois System Administration (the Vice Presidents report to the President, not the campus level chancellors). Though, when the media says: "University of Illinois" everyone (including, usually, the author) thinks of the Urbana campus.

You can see, for example, the system level proposal is much more generous in UIC's role than the media's portrayal (though UIC is a secondary player). www.trustees.uillinois.edu/trustees/agenda/September-12-2013-BOT/p-UI-LABS.pdfThe media essentially needs to be trained to say "University of Illinois campuses" when it's trying to refer to the system, and then give credit to individual campuses when due. About ten years ago, the central administration asked Urbana to refer to itself as "University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (or UIUC), but the campus has largely abandoned that practice. UI Labs is an interesting project, because it divorces the research aspects from the teaching aspects of the campuses. The digital lab is a huge win for Chicago, but it's crazy that $250mm over 5 years considered a game changer. UIC brings in $400+mm a year by itself.

Big D, have you been getting phone solicitations for donations from UIC "students" during the evening hours? I got one a few weeks back and before I picked up, noticed that the area code was 217, i.e., Urbana. Anybody else notice that? The last one I got, just a couple of nights ago, the number came up as "unavailable".

uicc79, I get those calls too. I'm not sure if it's UIUC trying to collect money from UIC/UIS graduates or if it's the alumni association that is HQ'd in Urbana... Although I'm sure any money they collect goes straight to UIUC anyway. lol

Gifts are handled by the University of Illinois Foundation, which is located in Urbana.
They process the contributions for the 3 campuses. To assure that contributions go to UIC, you MUST be very specific with your intentions. For example: UIC Library, UIC Men's Basketball.
In fact, you can drill down even further: for example, UIC Men's Basketball can be designated specifically for player scholarships, facility improvements, or some other specific target.

What happens if you don't specify anything? Does it go to UIUC? Or get split between the three campuses?

Let me clarify. I always give money to the college I graduated from, the UIC College of Engineering. They mail me a solicitation (actually, several) during the course of the year. You can get very specific as to where you want that donation to go, I have mine go to the college department that I graduated from. In other words, I donate specifically to the UIC COE, Department of Civil Engineering. I assume; no, I expect, that money goes no place else within the university, not just in general to the U of I Foundation (I get solicitations from them also), and certainly not to UIUC. For the last couple of years, I've started getting phone solicitations from UIC COE students. I never pledge over the phone for any cause, so I politely tell them I will donate the way I always have. But the call I got a few weeks back was from the 217 area code, said they were a UIC COE student, and would I donate. If the UIC COE now has a "extension" campus at UIUC, I'm not aware of it. It was not the alumni association, it was not the U of I Foundation. I'm sure that all solicitations are handled from the UIUC campus, (when I mail in my donation, it goes to an address on Green Street in Urbana); I have no problem with that. Just don't tell me you're a UIC student when the area code is 217. That's just dishonest.

uicc79, There was a period of time last year when I think I literally got a donation phone call every night for a month. I don't recall the number, but I don't think it was from Chicago. Either way, I never answer. If I want to donate, I'll do it online. During the last call when I said that, they pushed me to do it over the phone. I declined and then I got an email right after that asking me to donate to UIS....not a typo....UI-Springfield. Was not happy about that. They want the money but can't even get my alma mater right. That's not good. Admittedly, my donations have slowed down...I've given to engineering, and to athletics. But, in the last few years of JC's tenure...I told the callers I'd donate when JC was out of the picture. After our win against UIUC, I gave them a nice Christmas present...but now, I'm gonna need to see UIC improving itself...athletically and academically...and separating itself from UIUC. I'm not even a medical school grad, and it pisses me off that we're called University of Illinois now....we know who gets credit for that. I'm not happy with the direction of the university, which is being taken over by UIUC daily. I'll be damned if I see $1 of mine support that dump in Urbana. If UIC wants to start a law school fund with a guarantee to start one up when they raise X amount of money, count me in
