The recent article in Sunday's Tribune (front page) should trigger some backlash and response from tax payers toward the U of I trustees and Chancellor Phyllis Wise. I am outraged both as a tax payer in Illinois as well as an alumni of UIC at the railroading and underhanded proceedings that precluded the completion of a "personal agenda" of Wise's in the establishment of a new medical school in Champaign.
Though all the communications were not published there is enough doubt cast that the entire move was a personal campaign without regard for tax payer responsibility. Our state is in horrible financial shape with education funding being cut at all levels by the state government all around. How the board could even consider funding a brand new medical school where one doesn't exist is fiscally irresponsible and down right criminal. I'm sure some private funding/gifts may have been obtained but the brunt of the financing in future years is going to fall on us, the Illinois tax payers. Monopoly money I presume???
A well regarded medical school already exists where an expansion of program could probably be accomplished at far less than "start up" costs in Champaign. I plan to write a letter to the governor as well as the university president to express my disgust in the entire deal. The article states that Chris Kennedy was initially opposed to the idea at the get go but Wise viewed it as a personal achievement and eventually got approvals obtained. But at what costs and what underhanded means???
The school is set to begin enrolling in 2017. How about it's decision being reversed? The image of U of I has been damaged lately by several outlandish events on a local and national scale. Let's do the right thing and get this band wagon reversed and at least save some face for Illinois people and the tax payers who invisibly get taken to the wood shed time after time. We can start by rescinding the $400,000 buy out Wise is to receive on her "resigning." What kind of crap is that!!!!!!
How foolish are we a tax payers to continually allow this kind of stuff to go on and not rise up and say "ENOUGH!!!"
Totally pissed off and sorry that more aren't, as well....... Just my thoughts....FYI.....
