The new college rankings came out and UIC jumped to its 2nd highest spot ever (129). We were 128 two years ago. Not surprisingly, despite the Sun-Times already having an article written by this time last year proclaiming us the biggest loser in the rankings in Illinois (in the 1st paragraph of the article), there is no article about our jump this year....in front of all the universities we have no business ever being behind (ISU, SIU, NIU, etc.).
Our main score, which is 22.5% of our overall ranking, is 36, up from 34 last year and down from 42 two years ago. This is a popularity contest involving high school counselor opinions and peer review. To me, it seems tough to gain much ground here...obviously this favors older established schools....and those that are rammed down our throats everyday.
18% of the score is 6-year grad rate, which is only 60% at UIC.
4.5% of the score is freshman retention rate, which is 79%.
6% is classes under 20 students....we're at 38.8%. This favors smaller, private schools.
2% is classes over 50 students...we're at 19%. Again, this favors smaller, private schools.
7% is average faculty salary, which again I'm guessing favors smaller, private schools.
1% is student:faculty ratio....do I need to say it again...
5% is alumni giving rate...one of my faves...and certainly not a category I'd guess we do well in considering I still see students wearing orange 'I' gear.
Anyway, glad to see we went back up....we'll probably end up in the 140s next year when the change the rankings yet again. Would love to see us in front of Depaul at least....they're at 123.
