The chicken or the egg? What came first? Was it the great basketball program or the support from the fans and alumni?
I feel that the great basketball program has to come first!!!!! UIC has to invest in the basketball program to bring the school to par with the other schools like; U of I, and DePaul at a regional and national level. I am frustrated that UIC ranks higher then DePaul in almost everything academically¡¦but we don¡¯t get the respect. Why?
Let me vent¡¦¡¦.
I know everyone is saying how UIC has no sense of community and no support for its sports programs team like other schools (ex U of I, DePaul and other bcs schools). Basketball and football being the biggest college sport¡¦and since UIC doesn¡¯t have a football team¡¦UIC has to focus on the basketball team. However, I feel if UIC had a better basketball program that performed on a consistent basis of getting into the NCAA Tourney and getting national attention...the fans will eventually form pride for the school and build a sense of community. The student body as well as UIC alumnus has to have a sense of pride or a focal point of the school to rally behind. UIC has really big alumni network of 160,000 Alumni and ONLY about 5 percent of them give to UIC. Why? Because no sense of pride or community for their university. Alumni giving is a big source of funding that UIC isn't utilizing. I am sure its hard....but UIC has to invests more of its energy and resources into the basketball program...they will in the long-run get far more in return...ex: ticket revenue, TV revenue, product sales, alumni giving, more students applying to UIC¡¦.and most important what everyone that goes to UIC wants¡¦..sense of community and pride in the school!!!! UIC has to make the UIC basketball program a top priority instead of an afterthought when considering ways to improve the university and the experience UIC students have at UIC. Once UIC has that focal point¡¦we can start to build traditions like every other school!! Let¡¯s make a difference¡¦.comment to the 2010 Strategic Thinking Committee. Oh and if we can use the school paper to bring awareness to the student body of this problem¡¦about how we need a focal point that all UIC students and alumni can rally behind. Hopefully the AD is reading this as well as the guys working for the UIC newspaper. Hopefully this can be the spark or the tipping point that UIC needs to move forward as a great school with as sense of community, pride and tradition. GO Flames!!!
Read about what UIC plans to do to improve UIC in the future¡¦and how the basketball program isn¡¯t a big priority¡¦just another afterthought!!
