If you haven't been to the Chicago Tribune website recently, you may want to stroll on by and place a vote in their latest poll. If you go to the sports/college page, they have a poll which asks "Is Illinois a 'Chicago' team?" As of right now, about 53% of voters say yes.
I say we post the following poll...."Does the Tribune have nothing better to write about or poll people about?" My vote is yes.....
Illinois is not a Chicago team...I'm sorry.....they play a couple times in Chicago and they may get some players from Chicago....but they are in that dumphole known as Champaign. Oh well, I'd bet people would say UIUC is more of a Chicago school than UIC, as ridiculous as that sounds....

I absolutely agree. The Tribune sports website is a joke.

Big D, just like Notre Dame which I can't stand, Illinois has a heavy concentration of alums living in the Chicagoland area. To them, their schools are extensions of Chicago.
Neither school is more than 2 and half hours away and quite a few of the media is from Illinois.

I absolutely agree. The Tribune sports website is a joke. Why limit it to the web site. The entire sports section is a bunch a crap. I was not a huge Bayless fan, but I liked Lincecombe. Both of those guys were the last real sports columnists in the Trib. Morrissey and Downey should never have been promoted outside of their collegiate newspaper. Those guys are about as boring as Loyola Ramblers basketball.

Oh well, I'd bet people would say UIUC is more of a Chicago school than UIC, as ridiculous as that sounds.... I happen to like Champaign. I am a UIC alum that relocated here 3+ years ago. Maybe you weren't necessarily picking on Champaign itself, but still. A nice, affordable place to live with enough stuff to do, and 2 hours from Chicago and Indy, 3 hours from St. Louis. Now that I am a townie, I must say the best time of year on campus is when the students are gone, hehe. While I do miss Chicago, I am close enough to go "home" often enough. It gives me a chance to refine my driving skills; the natives down here are horrible drivers: they drive 5-10 MPH under the speed limit, and routinely blow stop signs and treat red lights as yields. With a non-student population of 100,000 people, it's nice, and I don't have to deal with perpetual delays on the Eisenhower! Anyway, no, UIUC is not a Chicago school, but a big school with many alums living in the Chicago area, as mentioned. When I was a student at UIC in the 90's, it irked me that the Illini got more press than the Flames until the magical year of 1998, so I know how it feels. Falling off the face of the earth in 1999 didn't help matters. History and consistency will help, something that the Flames have not had much of. I agree though, the Tribune's sports website leaves much to be desired. And, *bleep* Notre Dame! At least UIUC is in the same state!

I am fine with the media discussing the Illini...I just want a decent share of that attention going to the Flames. The degree on the wall says "University of Illinois" then underneath it says at Chicago. Most people see it and start talking about Champaign anyway. At least it is in our state. Any schools in this area should get some attention. Notre Dame...well, it's iffy...but I Knute Rockne All American is on right now, so I say that's ok too.
