Picked this up from the Tribune..I believe it is dated from Friday, Jan 9. It basically states that it looks like Bubonja is coming back next year due to the clavicle injury he suffered at the end of next year hurting his chances in the draft. I do feel bad for Jovan getting hurt and having his pro career on hold for now. However, I also love the prospect of him returning next year! This could be his chance to get us to the College Cup. We would have a ton of guys returning, minus Baggio of course.
Bubonja's tough break
It wasn't that long ago that Illinois-Chicago goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja was getting Generation adidas consideration. Now the All-American keeper won't even be in next week's draft.
What happened?
Bubonja was passed up by Generation adidas because they felt they only needed one goalkeeper (California's Stefan Frei) since most teams are pleased with their keeper situation.
It didn't help that Bubonja broke his clavicle in a training session Nov. 26 -- the day after UIC defeated Michigan State in the NCAA tournament. If he entered the draft, teams likely would have been turned off by the injury.
He would also have a hard time impressing in training camp since he's been in a sling the last six weeks and is just now getting his coordination back. Doctors say he can catch low balls but shouldn't catch balls above his head until early February.
Bubonja will now likely return to UIC for his senior season.
NOTES: UIC midfielder Baggio Husidic left for the MLS player combine in Fort Lauderdale this morning. I'm hearing some MLS teams see him as a defensive midfielder. ... The Fire officially announced today that Cuauhtemoc Blanco will be back with the team this season.
