Hey, the baseball team won their first game of the year, 9-3 against S.F. Austin (not a top 25 team).
Interesting, with the team this year having only one returning starting player, that Coach Dee has stuck with the same starting lineup for all of the first 4 games. I guess the competition for starting jobs wasn't as wide open as we were led to believe. Not a complaint, just an observation.

To be honest, with the way that the team played against Tulane for the three games, I was a little surprised. I was expecting some blow outs and if I'm correct one or two of them were close. We still lost but it's tough being a midwest team this time of year playing teams from the south who have had a lot more practice outside and all. But I think we'll have some tough times early in the year but have a few good wins, and being optimistic, think we'll still take care of business in the conference.

Great to see our guys beat Illinois.
Wouldn't it be great if the Orange Plague would show up in Chicago once in a while?

I take back all the good stuff I said about the baseball team last month. The pitching staff has given up 73 runs in the last 8 games. If losing to Wright State 20-0 last week wasn't bad enough (even though they are a much better team than us), losing to and giving up 15 runs to something called Trinity International is totally ridiculous.

yeah, our pitching has been atrocious. We've made it a habit to give up a handful of runs or more very early in the game and then try to climb back into it.
It would be a shame to let our streak come to an end but WSU has a solid team this year. Despite how badly we've played these past couple weeks, amazingly, we're still in the race for the HL crown. I believe UIC and WSU have the same number of conference losses but I believe they won the overall series against us, so we're going to have to hope they lose some more and we win our HL games...

Well, it looks like we control our own destiny as far as winning conference is concerned.
WSU finished HL play with a record of 16-6. UIC currently stands at 14-6 with three games remaining at home against Valpo. If we sweep, we'll win conference. Otherwise, we finish 2nd.
Valpo played us real tough in Indiana, so it's going to be tough. Let's see what this team is made of. It would be quite an accomplishment in a rebuilding year to take conference though.

Congrats to Coach Dee and the team for bringing home their 7th straight HL title....with just 1 senior!!! They did it in dramatic fashion with a 2-run 9th inning to sweep Valpo 7-6.
I'm not sure we're the favorite in the HL tourney though. WSU is playing great baseball.

Congratulations to the UIC baseball team! Seven in a row is amazing! This years championship is a testament to Coach Dee and his coaching staff. I did not expect this team to win the regular season crowd this year, not with all the talent that left. This years kids worked hard, believed in their coaches and themselves, played hard and won. No matter how the tournament turns out, Coach Dee should really win the HL Coach of the Year award again. Without a doubt. Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to the tournament. I would love to see UIC in another Regional. I always fill with pride when I watch them play in a regional.
Good luck in the tourney!

Congrats to Coach Dee and the team for bringing home their 7th straight HL title....with just 1 senior!!! And that one senior is the least effective of the top 3 starting pitchers so the starting pitching should be better next year. What makes the the title even more amazing besides overcoming a mid-season funk of horrible pitching, is that we had to win the last 6 conference games to get to this point. Congrats to all !!!

What a great night for UIC baseball!
When I found out that UIC had won the first game of the doubleheader, I decided to skip the Fire game, and instead stuck around to watch the second game. Am I glad I did! That was one hell of a game, and the atmosphere was the best I have ever seen at a UIC baseball game.
Lots of people, students, parents, neighborhood people, even a small but noisy contingent cheering for Valpo. A sizable chunk of the UIC softball team was there, players from other sports, the athletic dept - you name it.
And EVERYBODY got their money's worth. The way Valpo was playing, the way they kept taking UIC's chances away with great defensive plays, it seemed like it was going to be Valpo's night.
But with two out in the bottom of the 9th, the Flames finally got to them. I don't think anyone imagined the winning run would be batted in on an infield hit. What a way finish a game! And since this was the final home game of any UIC sport for this season, what a way to finish a great year for UIC!
I am probably in the minority, but I actually like the Flame's chances in the tournament. Wright State has a bunch of big lugs that can hit the ball a mile, their pitching is much improved over last season, and they are probably the stronger team on paper. But the Flames have demonstrated a capacity to defy expectations and a knack for winning that in my opinion puts them in the category of high bordering on over achievers. I'll take scrappy high achievers over big lugs most of the time anyway, but especially in a tournament scenario where a hot pitcher can put anyone in the loser's bracket.
Congratulations to the players and coaches, and thanks again for the great game last night. Keep it up, and let's bring home the tournament championship!
