Love this quote in a Trib article today about a program that helps low-income kids gets get into colleges...
"HighSight, which is run by executive director Mark Duhon, is a four-year program that offers tutoring, mentoring, leadership development and college-readiness programs to help its students succeed at the private high school of their choice and do well in college.
About 300 students have gone through the HighSight program since it wad founded in 1992, Duhon said. More than 95 percent of the students, who predominantly come from minority groups, enroll in competitive colleges, including Marquette University in Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
The program is popular with students and their families because it helps them realize that they don't have to settle when it comes to college, Duhon said.
'We know by getting a solid education at smaller, private schools they have a better chance of getting into and succeeding at the college level,' he said. 'We're working with first generation (to go to college) kids. They're shooting for UIC (the University of Illinois at Chicago) or Northeastern (Illinois University in Chicago) because they think that's the best they can do. ... We're coaching them to get into Big Ten or small liberal arts schools.'"
Yikes...another moron that loves to quote USNews rankings I'm sure. No matter how small the article, this is bad publicity for UIC....again.

Quite unfortunate that someone like that seems to be quite uneducated on actual colleges. It is bad publicity but I don't know if it will have any affect on UIC. But I see the point in that it is, well, bad publicity. Perhaps I should tell him how many people I know that ended up going to a school like DePaul that were rejected from UIC? The answer is more than just a few. People who actually know what they're talking about and aren't completely naive know that it takes more than just filling out an application to go to UIC.

Agree John. If this guy is preaching to the media about UIC not being a school of choice, then you know that all the kids and employees in that program are made very aware of that opinion. And those kids and employees will eventually spread what they heard to others and the idea that UIC is not a school you should settle for is always floating out there and is always being picked up and passed on. One ignorant person can infect a lot of people with a lot of bad ideas.
