And how about that....
After the season this team has had, we are playing for the conference championship today, ha. Crazy how things work. I mean, as we said this team has talent and shouldn't have the record that they do.
Winner take all against Valpo today. Let's pull this one out!

Nice run by the Flames. Valpo has a solid team this year and is deserving of the bid. Hopefully we can improve next year and get back on top. It just doesn't feel right for our season to be ending this early.

Good run but they should have been playing like that all year. But a lot of young guys and hopefully can build on this.
If you go to UICFlames.com and look at the picture of them accepting the "Runner Up" trophy, not sure who the players are but they looked pissed to be accepting it. I know a few posts on here were wondering if the team cared still a few weeks ago.

We finish the year with a record of 23-34, 12-17 in the HL, the most conference losses EVER and a 4th place finish. In fact, we were just as close to last place, 5 1/2 games out, than we were to 3rd place, much less competing for 1st or 2nd place.
Our 3 senior players, all pitchers, were 3of our 4 worst players. But we can't even take solace in the "addition by subtraction" theory for next year. The freshmen pitchers that were so good early on, deteriorated as the year went on.
Our bullpen was horrible. In fact, several games were lost when starters were left in too long with leads of multiple runs in the 7th inning and later. Because there was no effective relief in the bullpen, the starter was left in and ended up losing the game.
This was no more evident than in the HL Tournament when we had a 3-1 lead versus Valpo in the 8th inning. We had no closer to bring in. We lost the game 4-3.
I don't buy the excuse that this was a young team. We were younger 2 months ago when we won 6 games in a row and had a record of 11-12 and were tied for 1st place in the HL. Since then we had a 5 and an 8 game losing streak.
Yes, winning 4 of 6 games in the HL Tournament (on our home turf) was nice, but it in no way makes up for an otherwise horrible year.
