Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

The Dr. Jekyll (good Flames) side of the UIC Baseball team was on the field today as we beat Oakland 11-1.  As mentioned on UICFlames.com, this was the 10th game that we have scored 10+ runs.

Mr. Hyde (bad Flames) was on display when we lost to a very bad Chicago State team twice this year (14-12 and 8-7).

This team is nothing if not erratic.  We start off the season 3-0, then go 1-12, and are 9-2 in our last 11 games, for an overall record of 13-14.  After starting the HL season 0-4, we have gone 8-1, for a conference mark of 8-5.

The "Big 3" starters are beginning to come around after a poor start.  Second-line pitching is still erratic and a dependable closer is yet to be found.  Schulewitz has been good as long as he doesn't pitch more than 2 innings.  He gives up almost all of his runs after he pitches 2 innings.

The only consistent has been a porous defense, especially at SS and 3B.  49 errors in 27 games, including 3 today. Two infielders have fielding averages between .850 and .870.  (anything under .950 is not good)

Hopefully, by the time the HL Tournament rolls around, Dr. Jekyll will be on the field most games.

BTW, for those interested, like today's game, tomorrow's game will be streamed on the HL Network.

Saturday, the team will be playing a doubleheader because of a forecast of rain for Sunday. Game time for game #1 is 11am central.

With yesterday's loss to Oakland at home, we have now lost 3 of 4 to the 2 bottom-feeders of the conference. Not exactly a momentum builder going into the HL Tournament next week.

Circle, all this means is that the Flames will be your HL rep for a regional! After winning 8 in a row, they've now lost 5 of 6 with two more against the Grizz. This means next week they turn back into Mr. Hyde and run roughshod through the HLTourney!

I hope you're right about the Tourney (as well as your exuberance about the Men's Basketball team for this coming season).

Well, the outcome probably should have been expected...UIC sports continue to be allergic to any form of postseason. Didn't we win most of the games against UWM and Valpo this year during the regular season? Don't we have the most players on the first All-HL team? Swept out of the tournament. Ugh.

Let's pick up recruiting and sell this new field. We've already got a commitment from a very good player from NY, catcher Robert Calabrese...

Quite disappointing.

I mean, I know we can't beat Wright State and I had no faith that would change. However, being shutout against Valpo? Getting destroyed by UWM? Embarrassing showing.

So Youngstown State wins the leagues spot in the NCAA tourney and it's probably the only rep we send......
