Oh man. That’s quite the news.
It makes me wonder a few things:
1) Why gymnastics? As you said, men’s gymnastics has had a pretty decorated past. Always ranked or close to it. I think last year we hated the national championships at UIC even.
2) Even with UIC having ranked teams, we have never been close to competing with the elite programs. I don’t know how many programs are in NCAA Division I but it isn’t possible to get the top athletes and not possible to compete with the way gymnastics is set up. Same can be said for women’s tennis I suppose - so many straight league titles just to be swept by a top ranked team in the tournament.
3) We have a lot of programs that are just there. No offense to men’s or women’s track and field or swimming and diving programs but they never have competed in my history of following UIC athletics. And again, no offense, but what is their point? I suppose they don’t cost too much money to operate but still.
4) What is the reasoning for this? Simply cost cutting? Putting resources elsewhere? A hockey or football team? (Okay, that last one was meant to be ridiculous but would be great).
If letters are being sent out then word will get out. But knowing us we won’t comment on it as our program doesn’t like to say anything about anything.
