All of the above aside, the school is handling this move in the worst way possible. There's nothing about it on UICFlames.com. There's nothing on any of the social media feeds. In fact, some allege that the school is deleting Facebook comments that mention UIC gymnastics. The only messaging about this has been in the media and in back-channels like this one. That's not how you handle a crisis. As a longtime fan of the athletics program, it's really unsettling to watch this unfold like this. EDIT: So there is a story on UICFlames.com but it's not on the homepage and the headline is a bit misleading: UIC ANNOUNCES CHANGE TO SPORT OFFERINGS IN 2019-20. Lol. Read it here. I agree that it is being managed very poorly. Which doesn't surprise me because it seems like any government/State managed body or agency in Illinois handles everything like this so poorly. The complete truth is to some degree veiled. Whatever. But my opinion on the cut of the gymnastics program is that I don't feel strongly either way. There were some numbers thrown out there that haven't been confirmed so I won't use that to form an opinion/argument, at least for now. On one hand, I can see why the gymnastics program is being cut if room is being made for a new sport or if more effort will be given to the other existing sports. I can imagine the AD thinking "Our gymnastics program is one of the oldest at the school, but we rarely win any meets and tournaments. So what are we really doing? We are only 1 of 16 Division 1 programs in the country and we rarely win so maybe we should divert our attention and resources to something else." On the other hand, I can always get behind any of our athletic programs and support them to the end. If I wanted to be a negative Nancy, I can form an argument for cancelling every single one of our athletic programs. But the reality is that most collegiate sports operate at a loss and it's more about diversifying the things a University offers. I can go on about this but you guys get the point probably.

UIC is NOTORIOUS for being poor at ANY communication regarding their athletics programs, positive or negative- all you have to do is take a look at this board to determine that. Not surprising at all. That said, I would HARDLY call this a crisis- yes it sucks, yes, it will surely crush some dreams. But no one is dying, and any of the few who have a scholarship will have it honored. Bad things are happening in the city around us daily; this pales in comparison to most. Hopefully these athletes can find a place to transfer that will get them what they seek if they want to continue; but from the various articles, it does NOT seem like the sport is thriving ANYWHERE in the NCAA. Do I feel bad for those affected- absolutely. Stuff like this occurs every day, in school, in business, and in life. I don't think any of us get our lives lived out exactly how we might envision them...

On daily illini it shows salary. Charley nelson 49,000 Peter Jasson 82,000 Mary 26,000...each meet cost 40,000 to have at pavillion plus recuiting, scholarships, food, not sure what else coaches get paided for. not sure how much schlorships are worth either but I bet uic saves 750,000 or more on this reduction of sports... as the saying goes if you dont like it, play better. The kids that are good with get a spot on one of the 15 remaining schools that offer it. If not good enough for another college maybe it's a wake up call to take class serious get a job, buy a house, find a wife, get a few kids and travel the world

Can anybody confirm this??? That's a ridiculous amount.... its costs like this that hurts the athletic department.... the whole having the highest budget in the HL doesn't mean much when your spending this kind of money to use the pavilion

That is interesting, since UIC owns the Pavilion, so technically they would be taking money out of one pocket and putting it into the other. Certainly understandable for budget purposes, since nothing is free, but would be interesting to get confirmation on the $$$ spent on "rental."

Another thing to consider is that UIC can’t make money off other events if the Pavilion is being used for a gymnastics meet. Between both teams, there were 6 Sundays and 1 Saturday last season where the Pavilion was unavailable. Not sure how booked the Pavilion usually is on Sundays, but even if the meets are fairly inexpensive, the loss of revenue due to inability to rent the place out for some other event may be a factor.

Big D, revenue generated from Pavilion rentals do not go directly back to athletics, correct?... I'm talking about like concerts by The Cure, etc... none athletic events

No it is not returned to Athletics. It's part of campus auxiliary services. And they probably charge gymnastics the same or nearly the same as an external user.
