Congrats to Scott Ota who was taken in the 10th round by the Mets. Also we have a recruit (pitcher Tyler Schlaffer) coming in that was drafted by the Cubs in the 9th round. Anyone know how this works? Is Tyler likely to play for UIC next year? I would assume 9th round is not high enough to want to skip free education and start minor league life? If he does come to UIC, can he just re-enter the draft in the future as if the Cubs never took him?

Tyler will probably have 300,000 dollars plus on the table to sign with the Cubs, as a 9th rounder the Cubs selected him thinking he will sign. Tyler can choose to come to uic and be one of 35 guys on the team fighting over the NCAA allotment of 11 scholarships which means he will be paying for some of his education or sign with the Cubs get his 300,000 dollars and tell the Cubs if he doesn't get to mlb he wants Cubs to pay for his education which is the norm. If Tyler chooses to come to UIC he can not reenter draft until after his jr year. If he went jr college he can re enter next year. All NCAA is after 3 years. This is the first uic recuit I ever seen drafted as a high school kid. Great job as always by the uic coaches recuiting high level players. The Granderson stadium is definitely bringing in better players. Ever since stadium opened up in 2014 they had a kid drafted. Uic baseball is by far the best program at uic. They win and get there players to the pros. Men soccer has had a few but not the same numbers as baseball.

Thanks flamernation, very informative response.
How long would he have to play in the minors before he asks the Cubs to pay for school? And at that point, would he play for UIC still?
I had no idea a player in the 9th round would get something like $300k...geez.
Is it safe to say he won’t be at UIC next year then?

Well looking at his twitter, I think he’s skipping school for now 😉

Typically once the player gets released from there organization they have a window to enroll in a state school. Once he signs with the Cubs he will be a pro and forgo his college eligibility so he technically can still enroll at uic just cant play baseball.

Awesome seeing a UIC recruit, someone not even suiting up in college, going so high in the draft. But, as others have mentioned, pretty much seems like he will never suit up for UIC. Unfortunate for us as a program but great for the kid. Heck of an opportunity. And to be able to play for your favorite team growing up? Talk about a dream come true.
I also can’t think of any recruit being drafted this high recently either. .i believe Ryan Zink, a pitcher from Wisconsin years back, was drafted proper to playing for UIC but I thought he was much later (possibly 30th round).

If he were a college draftee in the 10th round, he'd be getting around 150K. Yeah, the Cubs expect him to sign. The extra money they paid him is money they took from somewhere/someone else in their signing bonus pool.
