I've been wanting to post about this story for the past week or so but I haven't.
I graduated from UIC 15 years ago and I felt greatly disturbed reading this. I honestly can't imagine how a student attending right now, especially a female student, would feel. To think that something like that would happen on campus is scary.
However, with that being said, some comments I have come across on Twitter about this make me think that UIC really needs to think about their security overall. Apparently there have been several incidents of assault in the parking garages in the past few years. And other incidents - such as persons entering the dormitories that are not students. Again, these are just from comments and I cannot verify them but would hope that someone wouldn't be making them up.
I honestly never felt unsafe walking on campus and honestly never felt unsafe walking in nearby neighborhoods. However, I know that doesn't really matter for a few reasons.
I really wish UIC would come out and let us all know what is going to be different moving forward. What is going to stop this? If these incidents are that frequent, then it should not have to come this far for real change to be made.
