Having negative efficiency for the season thus far is pretty impressive Mr. Gray. Does that mean the team would be better off with 4 people out there, instead of him? I realize not, but statistically its pretty funny.
I realize this would require a significant undertaking for someone else (I can't do it), but I always find it interesting to see the "plus/minus" of the score when certain players are in the game. Such as: The score is 15-12 when Neely checks into the game and when he leaves the score is 30-24, he has had a +3 effect on the game. Just another way to quantify a player's value besides counting their numbers.

I'm a big fan of +/-. Next week is a pretty slow week for me at work, personally, and on the Chicago basketball scene, so I might try and do some calculations during that time provided I can get substitutions in the box scores. Usually they are there though. I'll let you know if/when I do it.

I like +/- as well, although that's much more time consuming, I'd imagine. Plus, if either team doesn't publish a play-by-play, you can't do it. UIC didn't publich one for UWM or ISU (and those were the only two I checked), but luckily UWM and ISU posted them. Who knows if the other games have one available.

Efficiency ratings are somewhat meaningless when you don't have a coach.

Au contraire...we do have a coach...in name only. What we don't have is a role model who can mentor, train, develop, and improve talent.

...he also doesn't seem to grasp basic historically successful basketball strategies, so is therefore unable to convey these to his players.

In case you're interested I posted some things about plus-minus today at: www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-college-basketball/2009/12/uic-plus-minus-observations.html#more I also mentioned this thread. It's been very interesting to track. Below is all the raw plus-minus data if you want to make your impressions. Sorry it didn't format very well. Neely and Birton appear to be the best among the main rotation. This is no surprise to me. But, overall, these numbers tell me that our main rotation is being thoroughly outplayed by the other teams and our walk-ons are performing better than theirs. Thanks for putting in the time to do this. I'd be curious to see where the players stand after another 5-6 games. edit: oops, forgot Robbins, who actually has the best +/- of our core players. This appears to match up with the efficiency ratings.

Didn't get to watch the game, but I think Stewart is helping make everyone's number "less bad". Baby steps I guess...

I thought Birton played his best game of the season against Oregon State and it shows in the numbers here too. Good job by him down low.
