I have to say if we shot 69% from the field were never going to lose a game. The ROCK played a hell of a game, 20 points i think 7 assists. Ill take that every day if he can do it. Armond hot in the first half, just a great game. The defense looked really good, just a complete win. Lets hope we can cont. this, and on to UWM.

Wow talk about clicking on all cylinders, that was fun to see for once. Nice to see the subs get some playing time as well, that definitely made my Saturday!

Went to the game and good game all around. Nothing bad about the game. We played very good all around and Ced didn't even do that much. Good job finally getting a blowout victory. Collum was on fire. The crowd was decent size but very little noise. But admittedly, the game wasn't very exciting.
So now something that pissed me off. I went with 3 other friends and in the student section, we were standing. So for the first ten minutes of the game, we have two guys behind us complaining that we should be sitting down. Our reply of telling them just to stand up did not fly with them. Finally, they moved. What is with the attitude of some students at these games? Games like UIUC you better stand. I wish we could change the thinking around here.

Well, for one of the few times all year, I can honestly say that we played a great all-around game. Actually, from the webcast, it sounded like our first-half perimiter defense was pretty poor, but Nagy said the D was good and that Butler was just making some tough shots. And of course, that should be expected because for some reason it appears that teams always play their best game of the year against UIC.
If you tell me before the game that Banks scores 6 and we win by 25....I say your crazy and want to know who stepped it up. And the answer is....everybody.
Armond played a great first 5 minutes. Collum was lights out from behind the arc and he made some great passes. Bowen scored 12 points (I think) on jumpers...not on out-of control moves to the basket. Stefanov also hit some big shots. I'd still like to see Poole score some more, but at least he hustled today.
Overall, very pleased with the effort. It's nice to continue making the "Butler Way" the losing way. If we get an effort like this out of UIC in Milwaukee, we will compete....doubt it will happen, but we can all hope...

I wish we could change the thinking around here. The attitude will continue to be that way until there is no room for that type of attitude. That is, if the entire student section were full and everybody except these people were standing, they'd be the in the minority.....and they'd have no reason to be pissed because everyone's doing it. So, the solution? Get people to the games that are into it....and stand up in the student section....then people like this will realize that this is what is done in student sections.... It'll take some time but keep it up.....

I've been on haitus on this board for about a week.
But what a game against Butler. I thought we played a great game. We RAN the offense. We didn't rely on screens for Ced. We actually dumped the ball inside to create something. And if nothing was created, we drove. I don't mind that. At least we tried, and it worked. We had a ton of points inside the paint. It was a great game. I wish we played more like this until the end of the season.
We played great defense. Butler made some nasty 3s. It wasn't because of our defense. It was because of Butler's shot selection.
As for the student section: that's sad that you reported that. I wish we could get more students, and have them seriously participate. Just sad. I was at a Cleavend ST game, and there were 3 guys who painted their body UIC. Were those guys there this time? Are those guys regular? I wish they are regulars, that way we have at least someone who are "crazy."

I remember when the student section used to be right where that blue curtain is at. Some of the students were trash-talking at this former Butler player named Marshall. He looked back at the student section and looked like he wanted to "slam dunk" a UIC fan's a--! I find it interesting NBA players will go after the fans, but in college b-ball, the players will avoid fan confrontations!
That Butler Pav game was during the 1997-98 season.

In defense of the student section, there is now at least a few who go and stand during the entire game. Granted, it's not much, but last year I don't remember any. Last game, there were about 25-40 who consistantly were up. However, very little cheering. But yeah, it's pretty sad and pissed me off as well.

Jason, Until this season I used to go at it with many players. Rashad Phillips took my trash talking all game long and scored 31 points that night, by far the best a player has done when me and stomper have been in there head. I have pissed off many players from UWM who I can tell just want to kick my ass. Pearl hates us, and went to the league to get us kicked out of the seats, didnt work. CSU's old coach Rhally Massinino(I know i butchered that name) told me he was going to strangle me. And who can forget Farmer, giving me the meanist look I have ever seen, still to this day I would not want to pass Farmer by in a dark alley. But I would love to have the student section by the blue curtin, it would help create so much more noise by us.

It seems the number has grown slowly over each game the past few weeks. Keep pushing students...us old people can only do so much. It's honestly hard to think this way, because all you see on tv is big student sections, but every school started out with no fandom. More and more students came...then came back the next year, and the freshman just learned that that was the thing to do. It'll take time, but UIC can do it for sure. Just keep pushing people out there...wearing red, and cheering.

When I was a sophomore at Marquette, we had about 150-400 students depending on the game and you could walk in around tip and find a good seat in the student section. There were 4,500 students at the home game against Wisconsin this year and generally 1,000+ at each home game. Winning helps because students are the most fickle fans you will find.

Winning definitely helps but the past few seasons, we have been winning and it is obvious that's not the only thing we need to do. We are a midmajor and as a result, there needs to be even more. We're not like a Marquette who has Wisconsin and Louisville coming in. We had Georgia Tech come in and look at what happens. Of course, I think all of us know that we shouldn't expect a home game like that for quite some time now. However, this season, a few more are showing up. Hopefully this season's mediocre record doesn't set us back. A good end to the season will definitely help. Alot of the normal students either don't know much about the basketball team or look at them and see they're a midmajor and just don't care. That is what needs to be changed.

I agree with the assessment that high-profile teams don't come to the Pavilion enough to gain instant attendance. However, I really believe that the large student body at UIC can result in good basketball attendance. If 2 to 4 percent of the student body attended basketball games consistently, that would be an impressive crowd.

I believe that 3,500 students live on campus. If 10% of that shows up, wow. Would the student section fit that many even?

The fact is that people are far more likely to choose to attend UIC because they want to be engineers or doctors than because they want to attend basketball games.
And that's unfortunate, because there's really nothing stopping them from doing both.
I really don't think the athletic department has done nearly enough to promote basketball (and sports in general) as part of campus life at UIC. I also don't think the administration quite realizes that sports fandom is their best shot at creating the sense of community that they have been (supposedly) striving for all these years.
It needs to be actively promoted to the students FROM THE DAY THEY START at UIC. They need things like student-only after-game dances and parties at Circle Center. Maybe invite the opposing team's fans (student ID required, of course). ENCOURAGE them to make the trip from Milwaukee or wherever, and welcome them when they do. If groups of Panther loonies want to come whoop it up in the big city for the weekend, make it easy. Make a spectacle out of it. THAT's how you'll create a culture of fandom on campus.
The fact is, there is no better place to watch a sporting event than the Pavilion. It is in every way FAR SUPERIOR to the United Center, infinitely better than Comiskey Park, and only really second only to Wrigley Field in Chicago. Which is saying a hell of a lot considering that Wrigley Field is the grand cathedral of baseball.
