Weak! Once again, my fellow students disappointed me. There were maybe 10 of us standing during the game! 10 people, can you believe it? And I do not even want to repeat what one of the UIC fans said to another who was standing up? I mean, swearing is one thing but when racial remarks come up, that's when I draw the line! I am a little too pissed to even talk about the game.

Whats sad is those grade school kids outnumbered the fury and probably where the best fans the pavilion has seen in a long time

John, I was there tonight. Guys like you are the reason I'm Mr. Frontrow. I don't think I understand your comment Mr. Frontrow.... I do, however, respect UICJohn for doing something in the student section. Honestly, 10 people standing, although pretty sad, is 10 more people standing than last year. Keep up the good work and encourage those around you. As for the remarks made by this so-called UIC fan.....what is wrong with people? You don't have to get into detail but was he telling him to sit down or was it something else?

"Mr." Frontrow, I am not really even sure what that means. If you were in the front row of the student section, then that's one thing, but frontrow all around the stadium except section 109 has nothing to do with the student section.

Well, I mean, my friends made some Karl White signs and I took one but instead decided to roll it up and make it into a megaphone type thing. I mean, it seemed to work. Decided to make #50 and #44 our targets and after a while everyone starting making comments. I thought it was beginning to work, so we'll see. And yeah, those grade school kids were good. I went over by them at halftime and we gave them all high - fives. True story.
And about the "UIC fan", who was a student wearing a Fury T-shirt, I do not think that going into full detail will help anyone. I didn't hear what was said directly, but was told this. Basically, fans standing were told to "Sit down" followed by a racial comment. I hardly think that standing up at a college game deserves such a response and then followed by something like that is completely uncalled for!

The student section was a joke....it looked like 15 or so kids. And based on all the halftime and time out shooting contests, I don't think any of them knew much about basketball at all as usual....we really gotta find away to fix this.

I am in no way defending the student section. The student section, as a whole is pathetic. And half of the pople I talk to don't give a thought about going to the game. The student section wasn't incredibly bad. Maybe 50? That's being nice probably. About 10 -15 people actually standing and into the game. But I can't do everything so I do kind o take the bashing a little personal. I mean, do I want the student section to be packed and making noise all of the time? Absolutely! Can I do it by myself? No way! Should I just sit there and be like everyone else in the section? Hell no.

Your right uicjohn you guys dont deserved to be bashed. the guys that our ther and standing are defintly making there presense felt. I've actually given up on the student body as a whole. I dont think we need a bunch of fair weather fans. We our a very tough team to beat at home and thats becuase the small core group of fans that go, our some of the best fans in basketball. The pav can rock and be loud as hell with just 1000 fans and not many teams can say that. I think the fans that we have our great and I welcome the idea of having more fans, but not ones that dont want to get into the game, or even worse ones that our bashing those that our into the game

I don't know. I don't want to give up, not yet. I am not really sure what to contribute the lack of interest to though. One thing that is definitely true is that if one starts, eventually another will continue and then another and so on and so forth until the majority is doing differently and then what used to be the majority is now the minority. That was confusing, I know. What I am saying is a few people get rowdy and eventually others will follow. Yesterday, perhaps it was the alcohol, but I finally just didn't really care too much and just decided to go yell my ass off. Eventually, others starting to yell also. Starting a defense chant or two, and then others did also. A slow process, sure, but one that can be done.
Personally, I am hardcore into the sports because that is how it was in high school and it only seems like it should be now. In high school, it was all about going to football games or basketball games and it was natural for me to do the same in college. I don't know why it isn't like that with others.

Maybe you guys should emmulate how UWM built up there student section. When I was a freshman our avg attendance was 934 all together and now we had to move to a bigger arena cause our 6,000 seated Klotsche was not big enough. Get a few determined students who really really want to work at it. We were ALWAYS THERE in the same spot and always had signs and always were really really loud whether we were winning or losing. The alcohol helped that. It catches on and people will want to be a part of that. We also put in endless hours of promoting it in the dorms and at the student union. On gamedays we were up at 7am in the union passingout flyers and telling people to come and we did that all day long as we rotated a few of us guys in shifts. People slowly started to catch on and once the program started to take off many of the people started to come. UWM from now on has always had a very very very strong student section (Numbers wise) and it all started out with myself and 8 other guys...
Good luck

I think uichoops.com is a great start to building a student section.
An idea would be to do something like Duke, Illinois etc. do. Put together a cheer list for each game post it in the preview section of the game and here in the boards so all the students coming to the game that sit in the student section would all be on the same page. This way some very clever taunts could be heard as one.
Even if the student section is only 10 per game, if everyone is together it is harder for the average fan to yell at the students.
It will also be a great recruiting tool for other students. Everyone wants to be with the life of the party, and the student section is having a great time that is where the students will gravitate.

Bringing students in is hard, especially if we are not winning the way we are suppose to. I think if we are going to bring students in AND make them come back is that we have to make it fun for them. I remember there were a few games this season when I was sitting with my friend and I told him, "gosh, I know we're winning, but this is borning. I can literally hear a fan from across the court. The stadium is dead." We have to make it fun, guys. Sparky needs to come up with something better during time outs. I am always for creating chants. We don't do any or enough of it. Be creative. Create some chants. I think I recommended this on some previous posts. When UWM came in this season, they had chants. I was at the game and I was thinking to myself, "why aren't we coming back with chants of our own? Their fans are killing our fans." I think it would help make the atmosphere more fun if we had these kind of fan participation.

The student section does not need to censor itself. It should go hog-wild. The mascot, a University employee, does need to. Very very different situations.
