Agreed UIC96. Saw this tweet making the rounds yesterday - record portal day yesterday and it aint done yet. If changes arent made to to tranfer rules, this might just be the new normal. Going to be increasingly tougher for non top150 HS kids to land at D1 spots (particularly their top choices) in this environment. Yak and staff's strategy to fill the rest of our roster will be interesting to see.

Interesting that he's going to a lower conference - but would imagine playing in hometown and prob feeling like IPFW has better chance of competing at the top of the HL vs. we do in MVC played a role. Also perhaps there was a feeling like there was too much similarity between him and Jones at UIC?

Honestly did not see that as the choice, but wish him the best. Best of luck JJ!

Not that we’re owed anything, but it would be nice if we could occasionally get a reason for these moves. For closure lol. It also helps us identify what went wrong and if it’s something in our power to fix. If this is just a simple case of wanting to play in his hometown near his mom/family, then nothing wrong with that I guess. I think he could’ve been a really good player for us, particularly if he could learn to control his body a bit more on offense. At this point, he’s almost too strong/physical for his own good. When he initiates contact, it’s tough for refs to swallow the whistle.
He’s going to do really well in the Horizon. Could end up an all-conference player there.

Wow IPFW in the trash Horizon league? Yeah it can only be so he is closer to home or something. Very odd move and disappointing. He was a nice player. Not the best shooter and a tad undersized but solid.

Jones and Jackson were nothing alike IMO.

Big D, I think being close to home is certaily a perk, but I personally feel it had more to do with the coach, losses and overall atmoshphere.

He's gonna be all-Horizon there. Coach Jon Coffman is a better coach than Yak is at this point. He has a 156-129 overall record. He will allow a former 25+ ppg Indiana All Star to be leader (starting pg), facilitator and scorer that Coach Yak either didn't allow or was unable to see. You don't go from 27.6 ppg & 50% shooting in high school to 7.3 ppg in college if you're utilized properly and coached up. I've mentioned before that I thought Jackson should've been the starter. Tre Anderson was too one-on-one and not a good facilitator of the offense. Jackson looked to drive and dish more...especially when Cam was on the floor. This loss, the Carter loss and any other transfer this season falls squarely on the shoulders of Coach Yaklich. Players tend to get a sense of good coaching and how they like to/should be coached, especially if they're from winning programs. Both Jalen and Jace were from winning programs.

Uicaflame Loyola during their run has had a few Chicago kids Kennedy for one. Yeah we better hope nobody else transfers. This team is looking at 3-4 wins again next year sorry. Speaking of Kennedy - looks like he is in the portal now. Wonder if he'll come back to the MVC. Loyola's Hutson transferred back to MVC (UNI). Given Kennedy has 1 year left - doubt it would be UIC.
Would be cool to get a Chicago PG at UIC though. Have seen Coach Yak liked a few tweets about Kevin 'Boopie' Miller from CMU - would be a cool candidate in theory

Jace has heard from Texas A&M, Missouri, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Clemson, Minnesota, Butler, Northwestern, Iowa State, and Notre Dame.
Glad UIC coached him for two years just to get him to go to all these schools that overlooked him. Really am not sure how any program like UIC will ever build up. A Drake or Murray State or Belmont that has success recently and aspects of the program could theoretically compete year to year. But don’t see how a program line ours can.

UIC is recruiting the transfer portal hard now. It’s really the only controllable situation the mid-majors still have. You get 1 transfer free, but a 2nd transfer you have to sit. Getting transfers means players are less likely to leave unless we want them to leave. I’ve seen us connected to no less than 6 D2 players, and a bunch of other D1 transfers.
Grass is always greener for these players. They don’t want to learn to win. They don’t want to honor a commitment. Nobody cares about academics. They want money. Look at Damaria and Tyler Stevenson…bet they enjoyed their senior seasons warming their respective benches as minor contributors. Sure their team is in the tourney…but they won’t be playing in it.
UIC is a top 100 school in the country and is in a respectable conference. When Yak was hired, it was a no-brainer. His credentials were impeccable. He’s improved defenses everywhere he’s been. He runs defensive clinics for other coaches. There are players who enjoy it here. Okani recently tweeted how he’s grateful to have come here this last year. It’s not bad to everyone. People nowadays don’t want to work hard. They want to play and get instant results…and are selfish as hell…to hell with their teammates.
To me Yak’s problem has been more on the recruiting side…we seem to attract players with poor fundamentals (can’t dribble, can’t pass, can’t hit a layup or FT)…he’s failed to bring in a big man with post moves and there is too much pressure on our guards. I don’t understand all the nuances of the game, nor what goes on behind the scenes, but I refuse to believe he can’t coach. We were in a lot of games this season, and he’s not the one out there making junior-high level mistakes.
Recruit better. He can turn this around in one year. It’s being done all over the country. But you need to get guys in here that are high IQ and under control and fundamental in their game. Maybe if you recruit some Chicago players that take pride in their city, they’d be less likely to leave. These players coming in rarely have ties to us and the city. That makes it much easier to leave.

I do wonder - what would this year have been like had Franklin and Stevenson were on the team.
Maybe some players end up seeing that and thinking warming the bench isn’t worth it. Maybe.
Big D - you make a good point. I feel like Yak is taking square pegs (some players) and trying to fit them into a round hole (his system). Jalen seems like a Yak guy and then Anderson, who doesn’t, gets the majority of PT.
We have been calling on a ton of guys. Granted, the ones we have been connected to have had many other callers also. The problem is that the draw isn’t new anymore and we need to sell players on a vision but without much recent history to go back on.

Big D one transfer free then next one sits? I don't think that's right. Uic had two transfers this past season Jones and Okani. Multiple D 1 teams have more then 1 transfer play right away.

I mean that if a player transfers once, he can play right away, but if he transfers a 2nd time, he has to sit a year unless he gets a waiver…like Damaria. So Okani transferred from Duquesne and played right away, but if he wants to transfer out of UIC, he’ll have to sit unless he gets a waiver.
