Porter Moser going to DePaul wow “I haven’t talked to anybody,” Moser said. “I’m not even thinking about anything. I’m just absolutely not even engaging in anything like that … All rumor mill fodder. Nothing, nothing true.”

I just saw this on cbs sports. Have no clue who this could be. Out : Luke Yaklich Yaklich, who had a stout rep as a defensive tactician when he was hired, is out after four seasons and a 47-70 record. The Flames made the jump from the Horizon League to the Missouri Valley in Yaklich's third year but went 8-32 in league play after transitioning. The program was a victim the past two years in the transfer portal cycle. A source said Monday that a former power-conference head coach from the Midwest has been contacted for this job.

This is kinda fun to speculate on. Maybe Bruce Weber? He coached SIU in the MVC.

Pretty sure Craig Robinson’s name has come up the last two times we were hiring. This can’t be it, but it’s another name.

Won’t get too excited but if they’re reaching out for a former P5 coach, that would be significant money. And that would be a person who wouldn’t even bother unless we had a real plan on how to turn this around.
So there’s that?

Tom Crean formerly of Marquette and Indiana fame? He has not coached in a while, would he come back to coach mid-major basketball? His reaction to the game winner against Kentucky will always be funny to me. Reaction

I saw that. I started to respond but someone came in the office. Ha.
In think it’s fair except location. Just blocks away from downtown Chicago. All that the city has to offer. Not to mention that he neighborhood UIC is in. Granted, location might be the most subjective. But I would much rather be there than a cornfield.

Here are my thoughts:
Facilities - If you’re talking campus wide, for a mid-major, an A for sure. For the basketball program itself, I’d go B-. We have a newer practice facility, but CU1 is a drag…just a dark, cold place, built for hockey. It is ours and we’ve updated a bit, but we need a new arena.
Campus - The campus is big, nice, and constantly being updated. Commuter school reputation still brings us down a notch. I’d say B-.
Fanbase - Ok I think this needs to be divided into students and non-students. Students get a flat out F and no explanation is needed. 35000 students and you can’t even find 25 to come out once a week? I’d actually give non-students a C. The fact that even 500 people attend despite the money they charge for a program that hasn’t sniffed success in 20+ years is incredible. There are fans here that care. There are lots of things to do in Chicago and you need to compete for an audience. There are hundreds of thousands is alums in the area. More would attend if we win.
Location - A all the way. Campus basically downtown in an amazing city. Countless things to do. If Chicago is not an A, what is? Just because we aren’t getting Chicago kids doesn’t mean it’s not a destination kids would want to play in. It’s cited constantly by student athletes that come here.
Admin - No idea. I think they are trying. We moved to the Valley. It appears we are spending money. We just fired a coach with 2 contract years left, presumably because we think we can do better. New Chancellor worked for Coach K. I think UIC is very disorganized. So many people on staff, but no real direction. Too many ideas and not enough follow through on anything truly productive. Complete inability to solve the attendance issues. I think a C is fair.
Resources - What does this even mean? We’ve got money and we probably could be spending even more. But our location and large alumni base provides a unique opportunity for NIL if we can figure it out. I’d give an A.
History - This is overrated. You start winning games in the tourney next year and beyond and that’s the only history that matters. But I think a D is fair if you talk actual history. No tourney wins…very little success. Swing and miss on many coaches. Few traditions…no super famous alums.
Academics - This category needs to be added. We get an A. We were the best school in the Horizon, and we’re the best school in the Valley. We’re a top 90 institution if I recall correctly. Maybe athletes don’t care as much but it’s important. Most of these kids are not going pro and need to be educated. We have every program you can think of and we provide unmatched connection to business.
Overall - I think the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. UIC has been called a sleeping giant athletically for as long as I can remember. It still is. The one thing that would change the entire feel of this program is fans. If the seats were full, and we could experience a real home-court advantage, this is a slam dunk job. My only hesitation in taking this particular job is the fan support, which makes the whole program feel lifeless. Someone is going to have to start winning and winning with energy, and only then will the potential be realized. I think overall it’s a B.

Btw, I just hope Lipitz has it in him to make a strong hire. We need to get someone hungry. Is anyone else worried it’s going to be an another Steve McClain situation? Someone that won years ago before being fired and is now past their prime and won’t have the energy to provide what we need? Energy is so important for this job. Someone that can rile up a fanbase. Someone that cares to interact with the fanbase. Outside of an established recent pattern of winning as a head coach, that would be a priority of mine.

Uic needs to hire a winner. A coach that's has won somewhere else before. No more assistants with no experience. Even if it's a HS coach that's had a history of wining like a Kleinschmidt I would take!

Looks like the exact same search firm that found us Yaklich is working for us again… hoopdirt.com/daily-dirt-3-13-24/Also, I think it was around March 23 when news came out about UIC preparing to hire Yak. So this isn’t going to take very long I assume. 2 weeks tops?

We should have a coach by the time March madness wraps up; we don't want to fall behind.

We need none other than MJ to coach! We could give him a percentage of the university...
